Did you know that itchy skin is one of the MOST common reasons we see pets here at Low Cost Pet Vet in San Antonio?
Unfortunately, it’s very common for our furry friends to have issues with itchy skin, sometimes chronically. Just like us, pets can have all kinds of reasons they’re suffering. Allergies, parasites, even infections all contribute to our huge itchy dog skin problem.
What Can I Do To Stop My Dog Itching?
For the majority of dogs, parasites are the culprit behind their itching. In Texas, we deal with fleas, ticks, biting flies and mosquitoes – no matter what time of year it is, there is something trying to bite your pet!
If you have an itchy pet, we highly recommend your first stop being one of our vaccination clinics or our vet clinics to purchase some flea/tick medication. Here are a few that we recommend:
Bravecto – Bravecto is a 3 month flea/tick tablet that is great for a year round preventative. It’s extremely convenient, and highly recommended for pet parents that need something fuss-free that their pets will love.
Provecta – Provecta is an affordable monthly topical flea/tick preventative that also covers mosquitoes and biting flies. We recommend it for pets who are dealing with mosquitoes, or for pets that may be more sensitive to flea bites since this product kills the flea BEFORE it bites your pet.
Simparica Trio – Simparica Trio is a monthly all-in-one tablet that protects against fleas, ticks, heartworms, and intestinal parasites. It’s great if you’re looking for less products and more solutions!
Treating Skin Allergies & Itchiness Affordably
Fleas aren’t the only reason your pet could be suffering from itchy dog skin. We also see pets who are dealing with atopic dermatitis and allergies that cause chronic itchiness. Just like us, pets may be allergic to pollen, grass, food, or parasites! These conditions need to be treated by a veterinarian. If ignored, pet’s itchiness can get out of control causing hot spots and skin infections.
How Much Do Vets Charge for Treating Itchy Skin?
The cost for your visit will vary based off of what diagnostics and treatment your pet needs. The cost of the visit for itchy dog skin at Low Cost Pet Vet in San Antonio and doctor’s exam is $45. After examining your pet, our doctors will build a treatment plan to help them figure out what is causing your dog’s itchy skin, and how we can most effectively and affordably treat it.
For instance, we see many pets who suffer from hotspots. As well as treating the pet’s itchy skin, we may need to prescribe antibiotics or medications to help the pet’s damaged skin heal. Your technician and veterinarian will work with you to build an affordable itchy skin treatment plan that works for your pet without straining your budget.
How Can I Stop My Pet’s Chronic Itchy Dog Skin?
Fortunately, we now have access to medications that target itchy dog skin itself! Medications such as Apoquel and Cytopoint are both treatments that stop itching no matter the cause.
For pets with allergies, we may also work with you to see what lifestyle changes we can recommend. Unfortunately, we don’t currently offer allergy testing, but there are many options for limiting your pet’s exposure to common allergens.
